The real winner last night at MTV’s VMA awards was beauty. From the heartfelt un-makeup-ing moment of Alessia Cara’s performance all the way to the truly dazzling Swarovski lined-lashes of Vanessa Hudgens. The best thing? Beauty is the one fall trend you can wear now. Here’s a round-up of our favorite eye-makeup looks and how to recreate them at home—no makeup artist needed.
Jewel-Toned Eyes: High Drama
Vanessa Hudgens stole the show with dazzling red eyeliner topped with ruby-colored Swarovski crystals. To get this dramatic look, first line your lids with a liquid red eyeliner, like NYX Professional Makeup Vivid Brights Eyeliner in Vivid Fire, $7. Then arm yourself with lash glue, one of the best glues for this task is Callas Eyelash Adhesive in clear, $5. It’s K Beauty that’s preferred for being latex-free. You’ll also need: Square-tipped tweezers that make it much easier to apply, try Revlon Expert Tip, $8, and an assorted set of small to medium Swarovski Crystal Flatback Rhinestones, $11, plus a big box of infinite patience. But trust us one look at Vanessa’s Instagram and you’ll know it’s worth it. Once the liquid liner is dry, line lids with the glue brush. Peel adhesive off rhinestones and then use the dull-tipped tweezers to apply rhinestones. Have fun and get ready for your Insta-close up.
Low-Key & Lovely
Artist of the Year nominee, Lorde, wore a pink-purple eyeshadow with just a hint of shimmer. Recreate the look with Urban Decay’s Snatch, $19, in pale peach shimmer with gold glitter. Apply on lid and up over crease, just below brow bone for similar effect.
Neutral with a Pop
Hailee Steinfeld batted her lashes effortlessly with help from her makeup artist Vincent Oquendo. First, he applied a cream eye in a soft neutral shade, like Mally’s Evercolor Shadow Stick Extra, $25. Then he created a dramatic cat-eye with a liquid liner, like Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner, $22. Once the eye was set, he dusted her lids and face with a light natural bronzer, we like Ulta’s Baked Bronzer, $10. And for the high-impact finishing touches he added unstructured, medium-weight false lashes such as Mac 48 Lash, $17, and applied a sculpting mascara such as Benefit’s They’re Real! Lengthening Mascara. Our take: Try this look for day and then add the lashes at night.
And lastly, No Makeup
Alessia Cara’s performance of Scars to Your Beautiful was a reminder that your best look is all natural. Neutrogena, Makeup Removal Cleansing Towelettes, $7. Because there’s nothing more dramatic than being you.
